What can I expect during the first treatment?

During your first appointment, you and your practitioner will discuss in detail your main health concerns as well as your health history. (Please remember to complete your online patient information and health history forms prior to your appointment to allow your practitioner to review them ahead of time.) This detailed discussion and evaluation will allow your practitioner to make a initial diagnosis of your health concern(s) and overall well-being as well as discuss with you a treatment plan. After your acupuncture treatment, you and your practitioner will discuss the best ways to work towards achieving and maintaining your health and wellness goals.

What happens once the needles are in? Does it hurt?

Some patients may feel a bit nervous about coming for their first appointment and that is completely understandable – it’s a new experience. I am quick to reassure patients that acupuncture is not painful at all, and in fact, most patients find the treatments to be the most relaxing part of their day.

Patients often experience a deep sense of relaxation during the treatments and this is because Chinese Medicine has always understood that when the body is able to relax, it is also able to best heal itself. During a treatment, you may experience subtle sensations once the needles are in place which may be described as tingling, heaviness and radiating sensations, all positive, indicating that change is occurring within the channels. Most patients fall into a deep sense of calm and relaxation during a treatment and often get their best naps during this time!

It is very common to feel relaxed and possibly a bit groggy after a treatment, so we suggest avoiding strenuous activity until you know how you feel after a treatment and we recommend drinking plenty of water.

How many treatments will it take to get better?

This is a great question and the answer depends on a number of factors, some of which include the patient’s overall health, the severity of the condition and whether or not it is chronic or acute. It is difficult to give a specific number of treatments required, but in general, many patients may experience positive results after a series of 6-12 weekly treatments. Some patients may see results within the first few treatments, while others may require a longer series of treatments. Success of a treatment is based on the condition being treated, the experience of the practitioner, as well as the patient’s commitment to improve their own health.

Does Acupuncture always work?

Just as in any type of medicine, there isn’t one treatment that works for everyone and sometimes it takes longer to see improvement. After a series of treatments you and your practitioner will reevaluate your health concern(s) and determine if continued acupuncture is the best treatment for you or if an integrative approach would be beneficial. It is our goal to have your health improve, whether it is through acupuncture with us or through another form of medicine with a recommended provider.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Absolutely! We treat patients while they are trying to conceive and then throughout their pregnancy as well as postpartum. Acupuncture can help with pregnancy-related symptoms as your body adjusts to each stage in pregnancy, including nausea, digestive issues, constipation, back pain, emotional fluctuations, edema and fatigue. We help turn a breech baby when possible and assist with labor preparation when close to a due date. Acupuncture is also beneficial for postpartum support, including recovery after delivery, lactation support, postpartum depression/anxiety and fatigue.
